Takeaways
Davila Day School is a place where the deaf and hearing impaired go to get an opportunity at an equal education like any other kid. The team I met at Davila Day School took me as an intern. That’s when I met my meteor Mrs. McClellan, who welcomed me and showed me around her room. When I got the chance to interview Mrs.McClellan towards my last week of internship, I got important advice from Ms.McClellan on how to handle stress, achieving my goals, and how to get involved for a future career.
I am a person who gets sweaty hands, pits, and does vocal and motor tics. I can’t help to be stressed out and exhausted all the time, but I can learn to work relaxing with the advice my mentor gave me. One of my question I had on paper was, “How do you manage stress when all seems to fall apart?”. Ms. McClellan response was, “That’s a very good question. When I feel overwhelmed sometimes I get my aids to help me, or I go out let them (kids) run, give me two minutes breathe, come back down. That’s how I manage my stress, or sometimes I take home my work to have all of my lessons planned ahead of time, give me less stress, k”. I realized I don’t have to overwork myself to the point where I’m stressed to get everything done at once. I usually expect myself to take on more than I can chew in a day, which makes me lose focus on thing to another. I have to train myself to walk away and take a breather from situations when I’m frustrated or stressed.
When it comes to achieving my goals or something I never thought I could do, I usually doubt myself of what I’m capable of. Learning about what my monitor accomplished made me rethink of what I can do. Mrs.McClellan explain her achievements on goals she never thought of doing and sticking to it. She mentions, “ I never thought I can make all of the things work. Language, math, social studies, science with the same thing. For example, since we were focus on bugs, b.u.g.s, bugs, this we talk about book with the bugs. I have a book. Okay because we will guide them through summer school teaching to work through other bugs. The goal I have to work with the students who need express their words, numbers, counting numbers; like for example we are right now, we’re reviewing subtraction, addition, time, that they have- measurement. M-e-a-s-u-r-e-m-e-n-t for all- all the year. I try to apply to my current theme of bugs”. I found this really important to motivate yourself and think about who are you getting this done for, why it’s important, and characteristics other people see in me if it’s incomplete.
The last advice my mentor gave me was to keep going after what i love. Study and work hard for it by volunteering and practice to get better. Her advice to teenagers like me was, “If I give advice for teenagers like you, teenagers who are interning. If you want to become a teacher, getting your volunteer in teacher's aid. Get experience because I was a teacher’s aid for seven years, and I understand how the classroom works. But not only one classroom, I visit many, many schools. Visit many, many classrooms everywhere, so I understand better. That’s what I advise you, and talk with other people. Not just with one person, but open. Look around, and I hope you the best of luck. With this meaningful advice I know that I’ll never stop learning ASL. I’’ reconsider myself at interning at Davila Day School over the summer.
In conclusion my experience at Davila Day School was different than what I’m used to. This changed me to be open- minded of the people around me and how they get through life. This made me rethink about my life and how I’m lucky to have my hearing and be grateful in life.
