Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
Throughout my academic life I have overcome educational barriers. Some people might argue that those who talk often are annoying. Although some find being a “chatterbox” is a way to express thoughts and feelings. Some have selective mutism, which is anxiety for people to talk. I struggle with this in life, I only talk to close family members. I had a really hard time in elementary school, because I couldn't communicate in any way or form. Teachers and substitutes would expect me to talk, but I stayed silent. My mom would tell the teachers It was really hard for me to talk. I was forced to talk even if I was not ready. My mom made an agreement every year that if I talked in class, she would throw a pizza party for me. This was the worst idea because my peers pressured me to talk. I felt overwhelmed by all this pressure. I just wanted to be left alone.
For my school life I only talk if my mom is present. I have never wrote to anyone, made eye contact, or responded to the person talking to me. I needed some form of communication to show the person that I understood and acknowledged them. In the long run this would help me out to get where I needed to be in life. Finally, When I came to High Tech High Chula Vista I had recorded myself for my part of my presentation, which is the very first time people heard me verbally present. It was so nerve wracking at first, but I had finally found a way to present. It wasn’t until sophomore year that I actually presented live than to use an audio. This was progress to what I’m used to doing. When I had to present again in junior year I still did it the same way, and it feels good not going back to recordings. For now I’m comfortable presenting if my mom is in the front looking at me, but that does not mean I will not figure out others ways to communicate and present.
