.Here is my work on the first day on the job. This is the very first task my mentor guided me through to make sure I completed it right. I was nervous at first, but my mentor reassured me that there was nothing to worry about, and if I did make a mistake, let her know. I got to to cut out spacers for the kids, as well as organizing putting packets together.
.I got to color an example of a cricket for the kids to reference if they get stuck. After coloring I got to staple pages together to create a work packet for a week. Honestly, putting paper together were tricky because there were so many pages to put together. I did get through it by referencing the first example my mentor created, which was very helpful. I was finding ways to keep me from being stressed. I got to take a breather and reassure myself I’ll get through my work.
.These are the kids’ folders to put their completed work in. Whenever students were done with their work they would either hand it to me or put it away themselves. As I did this I got to remember the kids name. As I did this I got the 3 chance to ask their name, but they would only do their sign name. I couldn’t understand their fluent signing, but they got their folder showing me what their name was along with their sign.
.On the days I came early I would get started on I’ve been told the day before. I would work until one if the aids or Mrs.McClellan came. If Mrs.McClellan came she asked me to put the chairs down for the kids to eat breakfast. Once I finished, I went back to my task until I needed another task to complete.
.My assignment was to look through a ASL dictionary book, which I didn’t even know existed! I looked through it finding signs for the words, print them, and cut and paste on the card strip. If I couldn’t find a word I found synonyms for the word in order for kids to understand what the image was with the word. As I was looking through the book I couldn’t help to notice that some words give a different description of how to do the sign and than how people use them now. For example, ‘perfect’ is similar back then than how it changed, but it still means the same thing. After discovering this, my mind drifted off to slang signs, and how it was used from back then and compare it now.
.For all this week I got to be a “kindergartener” again. I got to color a lot, which was very tedious, but also fun. I got to consider this task a stress reliever because these were easy task that didn’t need much questioning of what to do.
.I got to paint the snail however I want, so I expressed my creativity with random pattern colors. I thought my snail’s pattern was turn out terrible, but I’m actually proud of how the colors turned out. The colors really shows me, and the how I like patterns that don’t “fit together”.
.Creating cut outs for the kids to make their person with the medal. Their person with the medal shows their success to move from kindergarten to first grade. Instead of stapling all the things the kids needed, I only paper clipped them.
.I got to make fireflies in a jar! I fingerpainted the fireflies, waited for them to dry, and drew eyes and wings. Once I finished with the eyes and wings I I used foil for the lid, and cut out more foil for the students. After, I was finished with this Mrs. McClellan did use it as an example later in the week.
.I got to cut out an old lady from the book ‘There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly’. After I cut out the old lady I glued her onto a paper bag. After I glued her, I cut out the mouth so she can eat the things that the book says she eats. I did get to cut out circles of what the old lady eats when you follow the book.
.This was a canvas that had a drawing of a butterfly, flowers, and grass. I was instructed to go over the canvas in blue. I did not know what it was for, but when I finished Mrs. McClellan said that was fine and I did good.
.I helped a student with math. It wasn’t easy, but I was having him draw out circles and have him cross out how much was being subtracted. Some of them he was off by one or two, but he did some of them right the first time. Eventually, he got through it without giving up! He kept at it until he understood it.
.I colored in a worm and learned about their life cycle! Learning about worms and their natural habitat is amazing! Worms like to live in wet areas and in soil. If you have worms in your soil that means the soil is healthy. When the soil is healthy it helps the plants grow!
.Here is the worm life cycle I created. Worms are in a cocoon, hatch, and become adults. I had fun creating this example of the worm life cycle. I enjoyed it because they’re worms and I got to learn about them as I put this together.
.Another worm project! Yes, another fun project about worms in their natural habitat in the soil. This was a tedious job drawing and cutting out every worm and grass for summer school. I enjoyed this because I got to draw a worm and glue it along the soil and grass.
.Five minutes of play time! One of the girls used her creative thinking to play the broken Connect 4 upside down. Aj, who is one of the aids noticed, and said, “That’s smart”. I signed,”She’s smart”. Aj then asked, “She did it?” and I signed, “Yes, she’s smart”.
.One of the students really wanted me to play with her, so we each filled in the image with shapes. This little girl would always have me pick first, I would sign, “What do you want?” she point at me then the three options in front of us, which I knew she still wanted me to pick first. When I picked the one I wanted to have fun with she would like mine.
.We made it through the last day at Davila Day School! For a celebration I brought my mom’s crock pot, with hot dogs, goodie bags for the kids, and special gifts for my mentor and the aids. I am grateful for this experience, and I will actually miss working here. On my first day everyone made me feel welcomed, and told me I was apart of the staff team. I will never forget this very important time in my life.
.So sad to say this is my last day. These people will never fade away from my memories. Having a full work experience was a fun time and a lot of work. This is a selfie we just had to take, so I can remember my days at Davila Day School.
.Another picture of one the aids and m mentor Mrs.McClellan on the last day. I wish the aid the best of luck moving to the Dominican Republic. As for Mrs.McClellan I can’t wait for her to come to my TPOL, and I can go back over the summer for my internship.
